“European Citizenship Education: Forging our way ahead with high-priority”

On 22 March at the European Parliament in Brussels, we organised the first meeting of the year of the Cross-Party Group on European Citizenship hosted by MEP Victor Negrescu (S&D, Romania).

It was a very fruitful meeting, with interesting insights from the MEP, parliamentary assistants and representatives of parliament and civil society who joined us to share their knowledge and proposals.

A full report below highlights the main topics discussed during the meeting.

A warm thank you to MEP Negrescu, MEPs Ruiz Devesa’s and Benifei’s parliamentary assistants (S&D) for their participation; the Youth Outreach Unit of the European Parliament, the Lifelong Learn Platform and EUMANS for contributing to the discussion with proposals and advice. Last but not least, our gratitude goes to the Friedrich Naumann Foundation for their financial support.

ECIT will continue to work on this issue, in view of the publication of the new ECI, and together with the MEPs of the Cross-Party Group to organise 3 more group events , culminating on 31 October at the 8th ECIT Annual Conference on European Citizenship.

Here is the strategic programme of quarterly meetings for 2023 is:

  • a second meeting around Europe Day (9 May) at the European University Institute in Florence;
  • a third meeting in early July, coinciding with the start of the Spanish Council Presidency, on the topic of political rights and the new EU electoral law;
  • fourth and final meeting in 2023 in correspondence with the ECIT Annual Conference scheduled for 31 October 2023 — the anniversary date of the Maastricht Treaty.
