EUROPEAN CITIZENSHIP IN THE RUN-UP TO THE EUROPEAN ELECTIONS
hybrid event WITH THE MOBILECIT PROJECT
24 / 01 / 24
According to the EU Treaties, it is as European citizens that we elect Members of the European Parliament. Despite this, there is a danger that European Citizenship itself will be ignored and taken for granted during the campaign for elections to the European Parliament, which is more national than European. Candidates and political parties should explain what European Citizenship is and, if elected, how they intend to develop this unique transnational status. The aim of this event will be to propose how awareness can be raised by focusing on proposals which go to the core of European Citizenship. These are proposals supported by the European Parliament, which should be implemented by the EU as a whole in the next legislature.
This event should be of interest to first-time voters and anyone planning to volunteer, be active, raise issues or run projects during the European election campaign.
Event structure
This event will be structured in two parts — practical training and then brainstorming about issues for the European elections.
PART ONE: training in how to organise a symbolic vote and use the MobileCIT voting tool to get people involved with the European elections. This tool can already be tested out by voting on 14 issues that are characteristic of mobile EU citizens (please see below for more details).
PART TWO: brainstorming three proposals for the European elections.
- Creating a Statute on European Citizenship;
- Strengthening political rights attached to EU Citizenship;
- Creating a European citizenship for all and not just the few.
Background reading
The event is designed to cover an ambitious agenda without long statements by speakers and a maximum amount of audience participation. To facilitate this process of dialogue and conversation, we provide the following background documents:

The MobileCIT project proposes 14 carefully selected issues that are characteristic of mobile citizens and that can be solved if EU citizens explicitly express a wish to solve them. You can do this by voting on the online platform Open2Vote.eu.
